ASHS Sports Prizegiving 2024
On a celebratory evening at Albany Senior High School, we gathered to honor the hard work, dedication, and outstanding achievements of our athletes and coaches across various sports. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as students shared their experiences from the season, reflecting on personal growth, team spirit, and unforgettable moments. Here’s a look at the highlights from each team's speeches:
Volleyball Girls
Jordan, a player on one of the Superleague volleyball teams and a coach for the girls' social team, opened the night with a heartfelt speech. She emphasized how volleyball has a special place in the hearts of all ASHS players, with two competitive teams and one social team fostering a community spirit. Reflecting on the season, she shared humorous anecdotes, including a memorable moment when coaches Lexi and Nadia both faceplanted while trying to teach the team how to dive.
Jordan celebrated the support system within the volleyball community, highlighting the importance of cheering each other on through highs and lows. A standout moment for her team was their victory over Takapuna’s prems team, which placed them into Division 1—the highest ranking achieved in the school's history. As she transitioned to coaching the harbour girls, Jordan expressed pride in their quick progress and encouraged the future growth of the volleyball community at ASHS.
Volleyball Boys
Next up was the captain of the boys' volleyball team, who candidly shared his experiences as the only Year 13 on the team. Although the team didn't record any wins in three years, he emphasized that the season was about the spirit and resilience of the players. Every match was played to the last point, creating a positive environment that valued effort over victory.
He reflected on his decision to join the team, stating he was proud to have spent his final year of high school volleyball at ASHS. The evening was a celebration of every player's contributions, and he encouraged everyone to cherish the journey, regardless of the outcomes.
Netball
Annie, vice-captain of Albany Senior Netball Team 1, took the stage to discuss the incredible 2024 season. Team 1 finished 2nd in College 1, Team 2 secured 4th place in College 6, and Team 3 fought valiantly in College 11. A highlight was their participation in UNISS, where they placed 21st in B Grade.
Annie expressed gratitude to the volunteer coaches who devoted their time and energy to the team. She shared her personal journey, recalling her initial feelings of intimidation as a Year 11 player surrounded by seniors. A turning point came in her Year 12 season when she discovered her position as a WD, leading to a boost in confidence and performance. Her message to anyone struggling was clear: growth comes with patience and perseverance.
Touch Rugby
The captain of the Touch team shared her love for the sport and her experiences during the season. She described how the team transformed from a group with a shaky connection to a tight-knit family, facing challenges head-on and celebrating their wins with enthusiasm. A standout experience was their tournament at Bruce Pullman Arena, which strengthened their bond and showcased their skills.
Special thanks were given to Coach Jake, who not only taught them about Touch but also imparted valuable life lessons. With humor, she revealed her secret to skipping class to meet with him under the pretense of discussing sports. This season has been unforgettable, filled with camaraderie and personal growth.
Football Girls
Isha, the captain of the ASHS girls' 1st XI football team, reflected on a season filled with challenges but also significant development. Despite results not meeting expectations, she took pride in the team's progress and the uplifting environment they created together. Competing in the North Harbour A2 senior league and participating in a tournament in Taupo were highlights that showcased their improvement and team spirit.
Isha thanked coaches Kieran, Nigel, and Jolan for their unwavering support and dedication. Their efforts in creating a positive atmosphere allowed the team to focus on growth and improvement. Isha expressed excitement for the future of ASHS football and the next generation of players who will continue the strong culture established this year.
Football Boys
Toby, the captain of the ASHS football team, shared his experience leading a squad with a wide range of skill levels—from beginners to experienced players. The season started rocky with several losses, but as the team progressed, they found themselves able to compete against tougher opponents. Toby emphasized that while there were highs and lows throughout the season, he cherished the relationships he built with his teammates and enjoyed the overall experience of playing together.
Hockey Girls
Lily, a player on the girls' hockey team, shared her experience of being part of an incredible squad. Thanks to Coach Reuben's encouragement, she discovered a team full of motivated and fun players. Lily highlighted the positive environment created by Reuben, who balanced competitiveness with a fun approach, resulting in a strong team culture.
She recognized manager June for her unwavering support throughout the season. The team focused on growth and built connections that deepened their bonds. Lily expressed gratitude for the dedication of both Reuben and June, stating that their enthusiasm made training enjoyable, and many players improved significantly over the season.
Hockey Boys
Jacob, a member of the boys' hockey team, reflected on a unique season, as they formed a joint team with Albany Junior High School and Hobsonville Point. He acknowledged that while their standing on the ladder wasn’t the best, the experience of playing together was what truly mattered.
He shared how the team dynamic was exceptional, making every Wednesday night game something to look forward to. Jacob expressed gratitude for Coach Sandy, an Olympian, who uplifted the team during tough games and contributed significantly to their development. He concluded by stating that this was his favorite season yet and looked forward to playing again next year.
Basketball Girls
Abby Cowie, the captain of the ASHS Girls Basketball Team, reflected on a memorable season filled with laughter and progress. Despite facing tough games, the high energy on the court and during training sessions made every moment special. Abby expressed her gratitude to Coach Jake for his support throughout the season, from enduring their antics in the van to providing food before games. She emphasized that the fun and teamwork shared among the girls made the season truly enjoyable.
Blues Awards
This year, the ASHS Sports Department proudly presented four Blues Awards, recognizing athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, achieved success at a national or international level, or made significant contributions to their community. The recipients included Lucas Mathison for inline hockey, who successfully represented New Zealand in California, despite placing 7th in his main grade. Riley Oxenham, who secured impressive placements at the New Zealand National Diving Championships, the South Island Championships, and the North Island Championships. Tayla Faulkner was honored for her representation in netball, having participated in several national tournaments. Finally, Ted Lee received recognition for his accomplishments in kickboxing, earning a silver medal at the World Kickboxing Association’s K1 World Championship in Scotland. Each recipient showcased remarkable dedication and talent in their respective sports, making them truly deserving of this prestigious recognition.
Sportspeople of the Year
This year’s nominees for the ASHS Sportsperson of the Year were selected based on points earned through various awards, special contributions to sports at ASHS, and adherence to our department's core values of fun, support, development, and inclusiveness. With only five points separating the gold winner from the lowest scoring nominee, it was an incredibly tight race among the seven nominees: Romy Carter, Abby Cowie, Toby Skelton, Lily McDowell, Brian Parado, Tayla Faulkner, and Charlotte Dugmore.
The Bronze award for Sports Person of the Year was awarded to Charlotte Dugmore, while the Silver award went to Tayla Faulkner. The Gold award for Sports Person of the Year was presented to Romy Carter, recognized for her exceptional character and contributions to the teams. Romy's ability to step outside her comfort zone, particularly in her support of the girls' football team, and her leadership as captain of the mixed touch team exemplified her commitment to ASHS sports. Her positive demeanor and hard work have left a lasting impact on her peers and the sports department. Congratulations to all our nominees and winners!
The prizegiving night was a wonderful celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. Each speech reflected the unique experiences of our athletes and the enduring spirit of ASHS sports. Thank you to all the athletes, coaches, and supporters who made this season memorable!

Tournament Week 2024
17 October 2024
The first week of September was an exciting and eventful time for our school sports teams as they competed in various tournaments across the North Island.
Netball Girls
For the first time, our netball girls played in the B grade at the UNISS tournament in Waitakere, moving up from last year’s C grade. They demonstrated remarkable skill and determination, finishing 21st out of 32 teams. Their hard work and perseverance were commendable! Huge thank you to coaches Kelly and Liv who were also camp mums for the week with support from the Cowie family. The girls held their own and couldn't have done it without you.
Football Girls
The football girls competed in the Kathy Seaward tournament in Taupo, where they truly shone. Despite facing some tough losses, the team's culture and environment were incredible. They supported one another throughout the week, creating a positive atmosphere that highlighted their camaraderie. The Year 13 students were celebrated on the final day, marking a bittersweet farewell. A special shout-out goes to Nigel and Kieran, who went above and beyond to ensure the girls had a memorable experience. The team finished 20th out of 32, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts!
Football Boys
The football boys also had a great week at the Malcolm Cowie tournament in Whangarei. They faced challenges head-on and showed tremendous perseverance, proving that teamwork and resilience can lead to success, regardless of the score.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our parents and helpers throughout the week. Your encouragement and dedication made a significant impact on our teams. Thank you for being the backbone of our sports community!
We’re looking forward to seeing what our athletes will achieve next!
North American Roller Hockey Championships - LA, USA
1st August 2024
Lucas Mathison recently represented Aotearoa in LA playing in the North American Roller Hockey Championships (NARCh). He played in the U16 Gold and Silver, as well as the U18 Gold and Silver divisions. It was a tough tournament.
The Canadian and American teams were just next level and they really got a taste of the kind of aggression and contact permitted in the sport over there.
Lucas as a goalie had a massive job and excelled beyond expectations!
We love to see our students shine in all sports! If you have a sporting result to share, email us at sports@ashs.school.nz

SAGA x Sports Committee Pride Roller Disco
16th June 2023
We celebrated Pride this year by hosting a roller disco in the school theatre in collaboration with our SAGA students and Sports Committee students. The groups worked hard together to gather students at lunch and had a huge turn out to help celebrate. Teachers and students alike enjoyed giving skating a go with lots of laughs and a great attitude.
Pride Students are a community that are often inactive at ASHS. This initiative is part of our work here at ASHS to make sure as many students are engaged in physical activity as possible. We truly believe physical activity is for EVERYONE. Our informal pick up and play programmes are great for those students who don't feel that competitive sport is for them but still want to participate and have fun with their friends.
We look forward to hosting more roller skating sessions in the future!
